This is a guest post from Hackney Anti-Raids. You may also wish to read Netpol’s key safety advice for people joining anti-fascist protests.

There has been rising violence and intimidation from racist groups, particularly targeting refugees living in hotels across the country. Hackney Anti-Raids have pulled together some suggestions for migrants who might be faced with racist attacks as they go about their daily lives.

What to do if you are being filmed

  • Do not engage or have a conversation with the person filming you.
  • Do not answer any questions they ask you. They will often put the footage online, so try not to react and avoid arguing and fighting back
  • Try to cover your face
  • Tell them: ‘I did not give consent to be filmed. Please stop and delete it now’
  • Speak loudly, calmly, and confidently so others can hear you
  • Ask for help from bystanders if needed
  • Walk away. They may follow you, but try to ignore them
  • Walk into a public space like a shop or station or even a busy main road where people can help you
  • You can try filming too. It may help de-escalate the situation and provide evidence you need later
