From all of our hundreds of Remembrance Calendar entries, we particularly feature certain cases that were of notable historical significance.

Cherry Groce

At long last The Cherry Groce Foundation unveiled the Cherry Groce Memorial on Sunday, 25 April 2021. The structure was designed by world-renowned architect Sir David Adjaye OBE.

Cherry Groce was shot in 1985 and two years later there was a trial. The result of that trial was that the police were found not guilty. “There was no responsibility or accountability for what had happened… it was like my mum got shot in the line of duty,” her son Lee explained.

Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions the Foundation had only issued limited personal invites to the official guests, but the unveiling was streamed live so that any members of the public could take part in this historic moment.

4WardEverUK’s Tippa Naphtali, said;

“The National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund was very happy to make a recent donation towards the memorial appeal. This will be a fitting tribute to both Cherry Groce and the Foundation that was established in her name”

Big respect to Lee Lawrence his family and supporters for this momentous achievement and lasting legacy… ‘onward ever’.

Speaking to The Voice, Chair of the Cherry Groce Foundation and son of Ms. Groce, Mr. Lee Lawrence said;

“I feel that now she can be rested. We can release her, she can be free because we’ve done everything we can in our power to honour her and allow her legacy to live on.”

Lee Lawrence is the award winning author of ‘The Louder I Will Sing’ his biography and Lee has been fighting for justice since the day his mother passed away. Read more here >

A Foundation spokesperson said: “It’s unfortunate that we are not able to have the big community celebration that was planned, however we will be planning something in the near future. In the meanwhile, thank you all for your ongoing support and we will continue to update you on the progress of the Cherry Groce Foundation education programme.”
